The world shrieks and clamors for out attention. Sometimes it’s hard to know what’s going on with us.

I want to share something I do that helps center me, especially effective if I’m feeling anxious, agitated, bored, restless or depressed.

It’s so simple you can do it while waiting in line, stirring a pot or, riding an elevator.

  1. Close your eyes to tune out the compelling stream of visual stimuli.
  2.  Take a deep breath. And another.
  3.  Tune into your Heart area. Picture a hollowed, hallowed space in your chest.
  4. Imagine two doors that open this sacred cubbyhole.
  5. Take the knobs and pull the doors open and take a look inside.   For this, you can imagine you’re viewing the opening on a remote screen so you can see what’s going  on.
  6. What’s the state of your Heart?  Clean, sweet? Dirty, barren, fertile with a gentle breeze or a sneak peek at the Apocalypse?
  7. Reclaim your Heartspace. Whatever it takes to bring it to a lovely state. A cloth with polish? A sander and a pressure washer?
  8. Imagine what you’d like to find in your Heart: a beautiful flower? a candle? Cumulus clouds, a reflecting pond, a raging bonfire? Only what feels good to you, and be selective.
  9. Redesign your Heartspace if you like. Use symbolism and metaphor, which is the language of the Heart.
  10. Remember to tend to your Heart from time to time, especially if you’re anxious, restless or depressed.

Quick, easy, and absolutely free. All it takes is a few minutes of quiet and a playful imagination.

Questions to ask:

Look at the exterior of your Heartspace. Is it inviting? private? welded shut? broken? wrapped in barbed wire? decorated?

Look at the doors. What are they made of? Do the hinges work? Are the knobs loose? Missing? Tend to your Heart.

What’s inside? I once found a fistful of worms that represented a loop of resentful thoughts that kept playing in my head. I cleaned out my Heart and within a few days, I felt emotionally lighter from releasing all that yucky stuff. Replace it with something beautiful instead.

Create an appreciation altar in your Heart. Pin images of those you love, fond memories, delights and dreams on the back wall of your HeartSpace.

Gently close the doors of your heart. Breathe in the new aroma/incense of your Heart.
